Peanut Butter

Caution

Verdict

OK if xylitol-free — always check the label.

Toxic principle: xylitol (if present)

Verdict

Plain peanut butter made from just peanuts is generally safe for cats in very small amounts. The critical danger is xylitol — some brands use it as a sweetener. While xylitol toxicity in cats is less established than in dogs, it's best to avoid it. Peanut butter is also high in fat, so it should be fed sparingly. Cats generally don't enjoy peanut butter's taste, but some may lick it.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting (if too much consumed)
  • xylitol symptoms if applicable

What to do

Always check the label for xylitol. If present, treat as a poisoning emergency. For plain peanut butter, a tiny smear as an occasional treat is fine.
