Verdict
Rodenticides are not one toxin. Anticoagulant baits cause delayed internal bleeding. Bromethalin causes brain swelling. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) causes life-threatening high calcium and kidney failure. Cats are poisoned by eating bait or by eating a poisoned rodent. Because the product type changes treatment, the package matters more than the brand name.
Symptoms to watch for
- • vomiting
- • lethargy
- • pale gums
- • bleeding or bruising
- • collapse
What to do
Bring the bait box with you. Call a vet or poison control immediately even if the cat looks fine — some products have a delay of days.
