Verdict

Azaleas and rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins that affect sodium channels, causing GI upset, cardiovascular depression, and in severe cases, coma. All parts of the plant are toxic. Ingestion of even a few leaves can cause symptoms.

Symptoms to watch for

  • drooling
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • weakness
  • cardiac irregularities
  • collapse (severe cases)

What to do

Contact your vet if your cat ate azalea leaves. Remove azaleas from areas accessible to cats.
