🌿 Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Caution

Verdict

Caution — mild calcium oxalate irritation (less severe than true lilies).

Toxic principle: calcium oxalate crystals (less severe than Lilium)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) contain calcium oxalate crystals similar to pothos and philodendron, causing oral pain and drooling. Importantly, peace lilies are NOT in the Lilium genus and do NOT cause kidney failure like true lilies. The confusion in names causes unnecessary panic, but peace lilies are still irritating and should be kept away from cats.

Symptoms to watch for

  • oral pain
  • drooling
  • swelling of mouth and tongue
  • vomiting

What to do

Rinse mouth, offer cold treats. Contact vet if symptoms are severe. Note: this is NOT the same as true lily (Lilium) poisoning.
