Poinsettia
CautionVerdict
Caution — usually mild drooling, not the holiday death-plant of urban legend.
Toxic principle: diterpenoid euphorbol esters, saponin-like detergents (usually mild)
Also called: christmas star

Verdict
Poinsettias contain irritating sap. ASPCA lists them as toxic, but most exposures are mouth irritation and a bit of vomiting. They are not true lilies and they do not cause kidney failure. The dangerous holiday bouquet is the one with lilies, holly, or mistletoe mixed in.
Symptoms to watch for
- • drooling
- • vomiting
- • lip rubbing
What to do
Wipe sap off fur. Call a vet if vomiting is repeated or you are not sure the bouquet was only poinsettia.
