Chives

Dangerous

Verdict

Never — allium family, toxic to cats.

Toxic principle: thiosulfate
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Chives are members of the allium family and contain the same thiosulfate compounds as onion and garlic. They cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia in cats. Chives are sometimes used as garnishes or in butter, so be vigilant about what your cat has access to. Even small amounts can cause problems for cats due to their heightened sensitivity to allium compounds.

Symptoms to watch for

  • lethargy
  • vomiting
  • pale gums
  • increased heart rate
  • weakness

What to do

Contact your vet promptly, especially if large amounts were ingested. All allium plants (onion, garlic, chives, leeks, scallions) carry the same risk for cats.
