Verdict

Cinnamon is not classified as toxic to cats by the ASPCA, but it can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth and digestive tract. Inhaling cinnamon powder can cause coughing and breathing difficulties. Essential oil of cinnamon is more concentrated and should be kept away from cats entirely.

Symptoms to watch for

  • mouth irritation and drooling
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • coughing (inhalation)

What to do

A small amount of cinnamon in food is generally fine. Keep powdered cinnamon and cinnamon essential oil out of reach.
