Caution

Verdict

Store-bought safe — wild mushrooms potentially deadly.

Toxic principle: varies by species

Verdict

Commercially grown mushrooms (white button, portobello, cremini, shiitake) are generally non-toxic for cats. The severe danger comes from wild mushrooms — species like Amanita phalloides (death cap) are lethal. Because toxic wild species are difficult to distinguish from safe ones, cats should be kept away from any mushrooms growing outdoors.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting and diarrhea
  • excessive salivation
  • weakness
  • seizures
  • liver failure (Amanita species)
  • coma

What to do

If your cat ate wild mushrooms, treat it as a poisoning emergency and call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately.
