Verdict

Coconut flesh and coconut oil contain medium-chain fatty acids that can cause diarrhea and GI upset when eaten in significant quantities. Small amounts are not harmful. Coconut water is high in potassium and should be avoided. The shell is a choking hazard.

Symptoms to watch for

  • loose stool
  • diarrhea
  • bloating (with large amounts)

What to do

Small amounts of plain coconut flesh as a treat are generally fine. Avoid coconut water and large portions.
