Verdict

Raisins are dried grapes and contain the same unknown toxin in a much more concentrated form. For cats — who are smaller and already more vulnerable — even a few raisins can trigger acute kidney failure. Raisins are often hidden in cereals, trail mix, cookies, and baked goods. Currants carry the same risk.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting within hours
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • loss of appetite
  • abdominal pain
  • little or no urine production

What to do

Emergency — call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Check ingredient lists for hidden raisins in cereals, granola bars, and baked goods.
