Ice Cream

Caution

Verdict

Avoid — sugar, dairy, and potential xylitol risk.

Toxic principle: lactose, sugar, potential xylitol
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Ice cream combines high sugar content with dairy (causing GI upset in lactose-intolerant cats) and is often made with dangerous flavors: chocolate, raisins, or coffee. Some low-sugar or sugar-free varieties contain xylitol. The high sugar and fat content makes ice cream unsuitable for cats regardless of flavor.

Symptoms to watch for

  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • bloating
  • xylitol symptoms if applicable

What to do

Keep ice cream away from cats. If your cat ate ice cream, check the flavor and ingredients for xylitol, chocolate, or grapes. If a dangerous ingredient was present, call your vet.
