Fish meal and unnamed by-products

Caution

Verdict

Caution — a quality and mercury conversation, not an acute toxin.

Verdict

Named fish meals can be excellent protein. Vague “by-product” is a quality signal, not a poison. Exclusive tuna or fish diets raise mercury and thiamine questions over months (see canned tuna on the foods list). A complete cat food that includes fish meal is not an emergency.

Symptoms to watch for

  • none acute from a complete food

What to do

No emergency. Rotate proteins if your vet is worried about a tuna-only habit.
