Spinach
Caution
Verdict
Very small amounts OK — regular feeding causes kidney stress.
Toxic principle: oxalic acid
Source: ASPCA
Verdict
Spinach contains oxalic acid, which can deposit oxalate crystals in the kidneys with repeated exposure. Cats with existing kidney problems (common in older cats) should avoid spinach entirely. A cat would need to eat very large amounts for acute toxicity, but regular feeding is not recommended.
Symptoms to watch for
- • vomiting
- • lethargy (with large or chronic intake)
- • abnormal urination (chronic)
What to do
An occasional small piece is not a concern for healthy cats, but do not regularly add spinach to a cat's food. Cats with kidney disease should avoid it completely.
