Chocolate

Dangerous

Verdict

Never — toxic, potentially fatal. Cats are more sensitive than dogs.

Toxic principle: theobromine, caffeine
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both methylxanthines that cats metabolize far more slowly than humans. While cats generally don't seek out chocolate, they can be exposed through dropped food or well-meaning owners. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate. Cats are smaller than dogs and more sensitive to theobromine, making even moderate amounts potentially lethal. The lethal dose of theobromine in cats is estimated at approximately 200 mg per kg of body weight.

Symptoms to watch for

  • muscle tremors
  • seizures

What to do

Contact your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Have the chocolate type and estimated weight consumed ready. Do not wait for symptoms — early treatment (inducing vomiting, activated charcoal) is far more effective.
