Verdict
Unbaked yeast dough continues to rise inside a cat's warm stomach, causing painful bloat and potentially life-threatening gastric dilatation. As the yeast ferments, it also produces ethanol that is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, causing alcohol poisoning. Cats are smaller than dogs, so the bloating and alcohol effects occur faster and more severely.
Symptoms to watch for

- • retching or unproductive vomiting
- • disorientation
- • weakness
- • collapse
What to do
Go to an emergency vet immediately. Gastric dilation is a surgical emergency. Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) en route.
